State Sen. Hoffman to challenge Rep. Peterson

State Sen. Gretchen Hoffman, a first-term Republican from Vargas, says she’ll challenge veteran DFL Rep. Collin Peterson in the 7th District Congressional race.

Hoffman was in a tough spot: The new state redistricting map put her into the same district as fellow Republican state Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen of Alexandria, who was first elected in 2006.

Hoffman’s announcement notes that she received a 100 percent rating from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and a “Best Friend of the Taxpayer” award from the Taxpayer’s League of Minnesota.

She also gained attention (and had to apologize) for a mistaken Tweet about a Senate colleague.

Lee Byberg, a Willmar business executive, is also seeking the Republican nomination to run against Peterson, who’s held the seat since 1991 and had big majorities in recent elections even though it’s considered a Republican area.
