Phil Hansen, a former Buffalo Bills cornerback who moved to Detroit Lakes after leaving the game, will run for the state Senate in November.
He’ll run as a Republican in the newly redistricted District 4, says the East Otter Tail Focus.
The area’s current state Senator, Keith Langseth, is not seeking re-election.
State Rep. Kent Eken, a DFLer from Twin Valley, is seeking his party’s endorsement to run in the Senate race.
Hansen played college football at North Dakota State, was drafted by Buffalo in the second round and played 11 years for the team. He appeared in three Super Bowls.
He’s married, has three children and owns a small snow removal and excavation company.
When asked where he stands on a new publicly funded Vikings stadium, he said he’d wait until he knows more about the issue, the paper said.
