Former state Rep. Larry Haws of St. Cloud has died

Larry Haws, who served five years in the Minnesota House and was a Stearns County commissioner, died Tuesday at his home in St. Cloud.

He was 72 and suffered from brain cancer.

A retired math teacher and coach, he also had been St. Cloud’s park and rec director for 27 years.

He was elected to the county board in 1999 and then won a special election to the state House in 2006. He was re-elected twice.

He gave a nice speech when he announced his retirement from the Legislature on the closing day of the 2010 session.
