State Rep. Lyle Koenen of Clara City will be moving his desk to the state Senate floor after winning Tuesday’s special election in District 20.

He’ll serve the last months of the late DFL Sen. Gary Kubly’s term. Kubly died from complications of ALS in March.

Koenen beat Republican Gregg Kulberg 54 percent to 40 percent in the special election. Independence Party candidate Leon Greenslit received 5 percent.

Koenen has to keep his campaign signs handy, though, because he’ll have another battle in November. Redistricting put him into the new Senate District 17 with another incumbent, Republican state Sen. Joe Gimse of Willmar.
