Legislature considers three candidates for Sviggum’s regent’s post

The Legislature’s Joint House and Senate Committee on Higher Education meets today to recommend a new candidate for the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents, to replace Steve Sviggum, who was forced to resign over a conflict of interest.

Three candidates for the post are:

  • Bob Vogel, president and chairman of New Market Bank;
  • Kelly Smith, superintendent of the Belle Plaine school district;
  • Tom Devine, an executive at the David Agency, an insurance agency based in Edina.

Sviggum resigned his regent position last month after he took a job as communications director for the state Senate.  A committee of regents decided he couldn’t hold both the spot on the board and the job at the Legislature.

The legislative committee is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. to interview the candidates and make a selection.
