White Bear Food Shelf head gets community service award

Jackie Reis, chair of the White Bear Area Emergency Food Shelf, has been given the J. Stanley and Doris Hill Legacy Award for her exemplary community service.

The award is given each year by the Century College Foundation, the Mahtomedi Area Educational Foundation and the White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation.

In addition to the White Bear food shelf, Reis has been active with such nonprofit organizations as the Red Cross, Resources for Child Caring, the White Bear Center for the Arts, the Minnesota Twins Community Fund, the Dale Warland Singers, St. John’s Hospital, the Bridge for Runaway Youth and the Peace Corps.

In remarks at the award reception last week, Reis said:

“Volunteering is fundamental to our democracy. It is what builds and sustains healthy communities.”

And she quoted a farmer who once told her:

“If we don’t join our neighbors to help our community, there will be no community left.”
