Saturday’s unveiling of the new Hubert H. Humphrey statue on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds will feature some heavy hitters, with speeches by President Bill Clinton, Vice President Walter Mondale, Gov. Mark Dayton and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
But some planning will be required to attend the 4:30 p.m. free event because of light rail construction and security measures.
St. Paul will close John Ireland and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvds. on Saturday morning; the Cedar Street Bridge over I-94 is closed because of light rail construction and University Avenue is also closed from Rice Street to Norfth Robert Street because of construction.
Free public parking will be available in the Centennial Parking Ramp. Handicapped/special needs parking is available in Lot H.
The statue will be placed at the HHH Memorial site on the Capitol Mall in St. Paul, at the intersection of John Ireland and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvds.
In addition to the 7-foot statue, the memorial has a garden and slabs of granite with quotations from Humphrey.
Crews installing the statue plan to keep it obscured until the grand unveiling.
