Dear Abby: How should I vote on marriage amendment? Signed, Perplexed Minnesotan

A fundraising email from Jeanne Phillips, aka Dear Abby, urges Minnesotans to vote no on the marriage amendment and asks for contributions to the opposition effort.

Phillips, who was born in Minneapolis but now lives in California, writes the advice column started by her mother, Pauline Phillips.

Both mother and daughter have been advocates for gay marriage in their columns.

In the fundraising missive written on behalf of Minnesotans United for All Families, Jeanne Phillips says:

“I was raised to believe that each and every one of us has intrinsic value. Excluding some citizens from their basic rights and freedoms because of who they are is wrong.”

“…My mother, Pauline Philips, the founder of the Dear Abby column, taught me as a young girl that when we are faced with a tough decision that affects another person, it is important to consider how we would want to be treated. No one would want to be told that it is illegal to marry the person they love, but that is exactly what this amendment would do.”

    Hey Joe

“No one would want to be told that it is illegal to marry the person they love, but that is exactly what this amendment would do.”

I refer you, Mr. Kimball, to Minnesota Statutes 517 et. seq.

    Reality check.

      Yes, we know.

However, the person you are quoting – Ms. Phillips – is currently a resident of California. It would not be surprising to learn that she is unaware of that particular nuance.
