Ramsey County installs solar water heating equipment atop law enforcement center

Ramsey County officials will throw the switch Friday on a new solar array atop the county’s Law Enforcement Center in St. Paul.

Let’s hope it’s a sunny day.

The new $230,000 solar thermal system will provide hot water at the building, which houses a jail, courtrooms and offices for the court system and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department. There’s also a shooting range in the building at 425 Grove St., just east of downtown St.  Paul.

Officials say the project was paid for with stimulus funds from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant to St. Paul and is  a partnership between the county, City of St. Paul, the state and federal governments and District Energy.

There will be a 10 a.m. ceremony on the building’s roof to show the 35 solar thermal panels, which they say will generate 93 MWH of useful energy annually.
