An exhibit on the Dakota-U.S. War of 1862, created by the Nicollet County Historical Society and students and faculty at Gustavus Adolphus College, will be displayed next year at the Smithsonian Institution.
The 12-panel exhibit, called “Commemorating Controversy: The Dakota-U.S. War of 1862,” will be at the Smithsonian sites in New York and Washington D.C., says the Mankato Free Press.
The exhibit started as a project for a college class taught by Ben Leonard, executive director of the Nicollet County Historical Society, and Gustavus professor Elizabeth Baer.
In January, Kevin Gover, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., spoke at Gustavus and liked the exhibit. An application was sent to the Smithsonian exhibition committee and accepted.
It will go to the Smithsonian at the end of the year and will be on display all of 2014 and until mid-2015, first at the Smithsonian’s American Indian Heye Center in New York and then at the Smithsonian’s Washington museum.
