Special election day in Red Wing: Six running for open mayoral seat

Six candidates are running for mayor in a special Red Wing election today.

They’re vying for the post vacated by Dennis Egan, who resigned in February to become a lobbyist for the frac sand industry.

The mining and transportation of the sand, used to help drill for oil and natural gas, has become a contentious issue in Red Wing and other nearby areas of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The candidates for the term that will end Jan. 1, 2017, are, according to the Red Wing Republican Eagle:

  • Dan Bender
  • Elizabeth Kocina
  • Christopher Nelson
  • John Sachen
  • Ernest Stone
  • Samantha Tix

Polls are open until 8 p.m. The new mayor is likely to be sworn in on June 24, the paper said.
