Lightning strikes, so now there will be nine tall ships in Duluth

The Halie & Matthew needs repairs after a lightning strike and fire.

One of the 10 sailing ships scheduled to be in Duluth this weekend for the Tall Ships Festival has been scuttled from the lineup.

The Halie & Matthew — 118-foot-long, two-masted gaff-rigged schooner — suffered a lightning strike and on-board fire recently. While no one was injured, repairs will keep the ship from making the trip to Duluth for the festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday.

Big crowds are expected for the event, which will feature replica ships of the War of 1812 and schooners that would have looked at home plying the Great Lakes in the 1850s.

The Halie & Matthew was one of the ships offering rides during the festival; those with tickets will be contacted and can get refunds or may be able to exchange for rides on another ship.
