DFL legislative leaders to rally with striking workers at Shakopee plant

A Tuesday rally for striking union members at Cretex Cos. in Shakopee will include top Minnesota DFL legislative leaders Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk and House Speaker Paul Thissen.

The 10 a.m. rally will support the 38 union members who’ve been on strike for six weeks after negotiations broke down. The company has proposed to end  company contributions to workers’ pensions and instead offer a company match to 401(k) plans.

The plant makes manhole covers, sewer pipes and other concrete projects used in area construction projects.

Union officials also say that 15 Latino members of Local 563 have filed civil rights charges against the company with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, alleging harassment, discrimination and retaliation in the workplace.
