New St. Paul Council Member Thao appoints competitor Nix as aide

Dai Thao, who was elected to the St. Paul City Council earlier this month, has appointed Noel Nix as his council aide through the end of the year.

That’s the same Noel Nix who came in second in the seven-person 1st Ward council race.

Nix had been serving as council aide to Melvin Carter III, who stepped down from the council last summer to take a state education job. Nix also stayed on as aide to Nathaniel Khaliq, who was appointed by the council to serve as the interim council member through the election.

Thao is the city’s first Hmong-American council member. He asked Nix to stay on through the end of the year, saying in a statement:

““We are in a time of incredible change and possibility for Ward 1.  Noel has played an important role in a number of projects currently under way.  He has graciously agreed to partner with me to ensure a smooth transition as I assume my duties as Ward 1’s representative on the City Council.”

And Nix said:

“Councilmember Thao is a dedicated community champion committed to securing the best possible future for everyone in Ward 1.  Inviting me to collaborate with him as his legislative aide is just one example of his commitment to bringing community members together to accomplish this goal.  I am honored to work with Councilmember Thao to lay a strong foundation for future success.”
