While Minnesota as a whole has bounced back and regained all the private-sector jobs lost in the recession, some cities have fared better than others, according to a study (PDF) by the state Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Minneapolis has seen a stellar recovery: The study shows it lost 10,955 private-sector jobs between 2007 and 2009 but regained 14,713 jobs between 2010 and 2012.
St. Paul, though, still needs to gain back 5,989 private-sector jobs to get back to its pre-2007 level. It lost 4,332 jobs in the recession and had continued employment declines in 2010 to 2012. (The study doesn’t look at public-sector jobs, which, of course, abound in St. Paul.)
An interesting note in the study of the state’s 25 largest cities:
Only one city (Golden Valley) suffered no job losses during the recession between 2007 and 2009. In fact, employment in Golden Valley increased each year between 2007 and 2011, before seeing a 1.3 percent decline in employment between 2011 and 2012.
