Number of new Minnesota business filings drops in 2013, still third highest ever

More than 58,000 new businesses filed papers with the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office in 2013; that’s down a bit from 2012 but still the third highest on record.

In announcing the numbers, Secretary of State Mark Ritchie said:

“This is a positive signal of Minnesota’s continued economic growth and employment opportunities. Our state has a healthy environment for business and we hope to see this growth continue in 2014.”

Numbers of new businesses for the past 10 years in the state are:

  • 2004 — 49,559
  • 2005 — 50, 649
  • 2006 — 50,666
  • 2007 — 55,782
  • 2008 — 55,137
  • 2009 — 63,338
  • 2010 — 55,223
  • 2011 — 51,723
  • 2012 — 60,827
  • 2013 — 58,260.
