State Rep. Debra Hilstrom gets womenwinning nod in secretary of state race

The PAC that supports pro-choice women candidates says Hilstrom is a strong advocate for women’s equality and is well qualified to replace Mark Ritchie.

State Rep. Debra Hilstrom, who’s seeking the DFL endorsement in the secretary of state’s race, got a boost Thursday from the womenwinning PAC, which supports pro-choice women political candidates.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie isn’t seeking re-election in November. Hilstrom and state Rep. Steve Simon are seeking the DFL endorsement; businessman Dennis Nguyen has been adding Republican legislators to his list of supporters in his bid for the Republican endorsement.

Hilstrom is in her seventh term in the House from Brooklyn Center. Lauren Beecham, executive director of womenwinning, said of Hilstrom:

“Not only is Debra the most qualified candidate in this race, but she has always been a strong advocate of equality for women. As Secretary of State, Debra will promote women’s participation in the political process and work to ensure equal opportunity and access for all in our state’s election system.”

The womenwinning PAC seeks out progressive women to run for elected office, then helps support them with fundraising. The group says 76 percent of its endorsed candidates won in last November’s election.
