Joan Mondale, the wife of former Vice President Walter Mondale, has entered hospice care, her family said.
A statement from the family issued by Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis asks for privacy, as her “life on this earth moves peacefully to its close.”
She is 83, and has been married for 58 years.
She was well-known for her work in the arts as her husband served as Minnesota attorney general, U.S. senator and vice president under President Jimmy Carter.
Mondale later lost a presidential bid in 1984 to President Ronald Reagan.
