Twin Cities mayors honor AmeriCorps and Senior Corps workers

To celebrate “Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service,” the Twin Cities mayors will have special events today for those serving in the area with AmeriCorps and Senior Corps.

The two programs have 1,300 members in the area.

Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which runs the programs, is in the Twin Cities for the day.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and Spencer will meet with AmeriCorps members and staff of College Possible in St. Paul today at 1:45 p.m.

Then they’ll visit AmeriCorps VISTA members and at-risk youth working in boat-building apprenticeships at Urban Boatbuilders in St. Paul.

Tonight, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges will join Coleman and Spencer at a party for the groups at the Turf Club.

Mayors from around the country are taking part in similar events for the national service members.
