Memorials in northeastern Minnesota Friday for Congressman Jim Oberstar

Events in Duluth and Oberstar’s hometown of Chisholm will honor the 18-term U.S. representative, who was well-known for his transportation expertise.

Memorials will be held Friday in northeastern Minnesota for the late U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, who was elected 18 times to serve northeastern Minnesota in Congress.

Oberstar died in May. He was 79. Initial memorial services were held in Maryland.

A 1 p.m. memorial service will be held in the Harborside Ballrooom at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Then there will be a 6 p.m. service at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, Oberstar’s hometown.

Gov. Mark Dayton and Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken are scheduled to attend both services.
