Ramsey County and White Bear Lake officials staged a groundbreaking Friday morning for a $3.5 million renovation of the White Bear Library.

The 40-year-old library, part of the Ramsey County Library system, will be enlarged and updated with amenities, including better children’s and teen areas, more computers, better energy efficiency and accessible bathrooms.

A citizens’ committee is trying to raise and additional $200,000 for other items not in the county’s budget, such as a fireplace, a reading patio and children’s literacy equipment.

The library is scheduled to reopen in February. During construction, the near Shoreview library has extended its hours.
