State Rep. Sondra Erickson, a retired school teacher, will head the House Education Policy Committee now that Republicans have regained a majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Erickson, 72, stopped teaching English at Princeton High School in 2000.
And her plan for this upcoming session, says the Rochester Post Bulletin: slow things down, because recent shifts in control of state government had been dizzying for school districts.
But there are likely GOP objectives for K-12 education, many of which will face opposition from the DFL-controlled Senate and Gov. Mark Dayton:
- End seniority in teacher layoffs
- Address the achievement gap by keeping good teachers in challenged schools
- Reduce the number of achievement tests
- Change Common Core standards
