Meetings planned on Snelling Avenue changes

St. Paul residents in the vicinity of Snelling Avenue will have two chances Monday to learn about big transportation projects in the works.

The Snelling Avenue bridge over I-94 will be removed and replaced in the summer, and a rapid bus line is coming by the end of the year to connect the two light rail lines to the Snelling corridor.

Bridge Work

The Snelling bridge meeting, hosted by MnDOT, is at 4 p.m. in Hamline University’s Anderson Center. Officials will talk about the bridge project, as well as sidewalk repair on Snelling between Selby and Pierce Butler Route.

The bridge over the freeway will be closed from May to August for the work; there will be some weekend closures on I-94.

Ride the A Line

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, at Macalester College’s Smail Gallery, the Macalester-Groveland Transportation Committee will host a meeting on Metro Transit’s new A Line bus rapid transit project, coming by the end of the year.

The new line will connect the two light rail lines to the Snelling commercial area and to Hamline University,  Macalester College, Highland Village, Rosedale Shopping Center, Minnehaha Park and Midway Shopping Center.

Buses will connect the Blue Line light rail from its Minneapolis 46th Street Station, run across the bridge to Ford Parkway, then to Snelling and up to the Green Line station, and north to Rosedale.

Touted features of the new A Line:

  • Frequent service: Service so frequent you won’t need a schedule, along with fewer stops so you’ll be moving more of the time
  • Train-like features: You’ll pay your fare before you get on for faster boarding and wait at enhanced stations
  • Enhanced stations with more amenities: Real-time departure signs so you’ll always know when the bus is coming, enhanced maps and signage
  • Enhanced security: Stations with cameras and emergency phones, fare enforcement by Transit Police and improved lighting
  • Specialized vehicles: Unique, recognizable buses with wider aisles and additional doors so more people can get on and off easily
