On Wednesday, Gov. Mark Dayton told highway officials to return the umlauts on the Lindström highway signs so the name of the Swedish enclave just north of the Twin Cities will be alphabetically correct in the Swedish language.

Dayton issued an executive order to fix the signs, which used to have the umlauts but lost them when the signs were replaced. And he said:

Even if I have to drive to Lindström, and paint the umlauts on the city limit signs myself, I’ll do it.”

The governor can save himself the trip. MnDOT officials say today:

Agency sign personnel were able to accomplish the work early Thursday morning.
