Rep. Tom Emmer says he has returned a $500 campaign contribution from Earl Holt III, the white supremacist leader who reportedly inspired the killer in the racist Charleston church shootings.

Dylann Roof, who allegedly killed nine African Americans in the church, had written that he first learned about brutal black on white murders from Holt’s group, the Council of Conservative Citizens, reports the New York Times.

The Times says Holt also contributed to Republican presidential campaigns, and that Ted Cruz and Rand Paul will return the money.

Former Rep. Michele Bachmann also received $3,200 in campaign contributions from Holt; MPR and the Star Tribune reported that she hadn’t commented yet on the matter.

  1. I realize it would never happen, but instead of giving the money back, it sure would be neat if they gave it to the NAACP instead.
