Michael Kim has been named the director of the University of Minnesota’s School of Music.
Kim, a musician and academic administrator, has been dean and professor at the Brandon University School of Music in Manitoba since 2008. He’ll start in Minnesota July 31.
The announcement from the U says Kim “holds a bachelor of music with distinction in piano performance from the University of Calgary, and both a master of music and a doctor of musical arts in piano performance from The Juilliard School, where he studied under Herbert Stessin.” He made his debut with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at age 15.
Scott Lipscomb, an associate professor and division head of music education and music therapy, has been serving as interim director of the School of Music for the past year.
He took charge after David Myers wasn’t reappointed as director in an administrative reshuffling, the Minnesota Daily reported.
