Special election will be Nov. 3 for Winkler seat in House District 46A

Voters in state House District 46A will go to the polls Nov. 3 to fill the seat being vacated by state Rep. Ryan Winkler, who’s leaving the Legislature because his family is moving to Belgium.

Gov. Mark Dayton set the special election date to coincide with local elections that day. The district includes St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Plymouth and all of Medicine Lake.

Winkler, from Golden Valley, was first elected in 2006 and is leaving halfway through his fifth two-year term. His wife, Jenny, will be senior vice president and general counsel for Rezidor Hotel Group, a majority-owned strategic partner of Carlson Hotels that is headquartered in Brussels.

Winkler says he’ll keep his job with Biothera, a Minnesota company with international operations, and split his time between Minnesota and Belgium.

Two DFLers have indicated they will run for the seat: Peggy Flanagan, executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota, and Tim Reardon, who runs a consulting firm.
