Gov. Dayton sets special election for Dec. 8 to fill Dill’s seat

Gov. Mark Dayton has called a special election for Dec. 8 to fill the state House District 3A seat that is vacant following the death of state Rep. David Dill.

Filings for the seat will be from Aug. 25-31. A primary election will be held Sept. 29, if needed.

Three DFLers — Ely City Council Member Heidi Omerza, Koochiching County Commissioner Rob Ecklund and environmental activist Bill Hansen of Tofte — have already announced plans to run; all said they’d seek the party endorsement.

The district includes International Falls, Cook, Tower, Ely and Grand Marais.

Dill was in his 7th term when he died Aug. 8 after battling cancer. He was 60.
