U of M and Macalester make list of top 25 LGBT-friendly colleges

Two Minnesota campuses are on a new list of colleges most friendly to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus and Macalester College in St. Paul made the list published today by the Campus Pride organization, which says the idex is based on policies, programs and practices in higher education.

The group calls it the LGBTQ index, adding q for “questioning” to the usual LGBT acronym.

Macalester and the U of M’s Twin Cities campus each received overall scores of 4.5 out of 5 in the rankings.

The overall scores were  compiled from ratings on individual LGBTQ-related aspects of the schools: policy inclusion; support and institutional commitment; academic life; student life; housing and residence life; campus safety; counseling and health; and recruitment and retention efforts.

Andy Birkey of The Column notes that Carleton College and Augsburg College also scored high in the rankings, but didn’t make the top 25.
