Rowzat Shipchandler has been named deputy commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.

Shipchandler had been working on racial equity efforts at the Saint Paul Foundation.

She’ll now oversee operations at the state department.

Human Rights Commissioner Kevin Lindsey said:

Rowzat is uniquely suited to help lead MDHR’s diversity and inclusion efforts in realizing Governor Mark Dayton’s commitment to equal employment opportunities, equal contracting opportunities, and full participation in civic life for all Minnesotans.

And Shipchandler said in a statement:

As a daughter of immigrants, diversity and inclusion is an area that has intrigued me throughout my career. This is an opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale.
