Election for Branden Petersen’s state Senate seat to be Feb. 9

Voters in state Senate District 35 will vote Feb. 9 in a special election to replace state Sen. Branden Petersen, who is leaving office to spend more time with his family.

A host of Republicans have expressed interest in running for the seat, which is considered safely in the GOP column.

The district includes parts of Anoka County, including Andover, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Ramsey.

The filing period runs from Dec. 8 through Dec. 14, 5 p.m.

If needed, a primary election will be held Jan. 12.

MinnPost’s Cindy Brucato says former state Rep. Jim Abeler is planning a run, as is Republican activist Andy Aplikowski. She said others also considering it are Don Huizenga, state Rep. Abigail Whelan and former state Rep. Kathy Tinglestad.

There are Still Two Parties in SD 35

A little further research for this article might have led to the discovery that the DFL has an announced candidate for the Special Election as well, in Roger Johnson, a long-time activist from Coon Rapids. Here’s a link for the Johnson announcement:

Roger quotes me in his announcement, in my role as Senate District DFL Chair. He is planning to provide a vigorous challenge to whomever becomes the Republican nominee.

The Republicans also have an Andover resident, Alex Huffman, running for the seat. It is also my understanding that former Rep. Tinglestad has other plans in mind, and is unlikely to run for this seat.
