Gov. Dayton attends slain deputy’s funeral; orders flags to be flown at half staff

Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith join thousands of law enforcement officers today in Aitkin for the funeral of Deputy Steven Sandberg, who was killed Sunday while on duty at a St. Cloud hospital.

Flags around the state are at half-staff today, by an order issued by the governor.

Sandberg’s wife Kristi teaches in the local schools and his 19-year-old daughter Cassie is a junior at Minnesota State University Moorehead.

The service is being held at the Aitkin High School, to accommodate the large crowd of mourners.

Sandberg was at the hospital monitoring a man who was hospitalized after an apparent suicide attempt. The suspect, Danny Hammond, 50, faced felony charges upon his release for kidnapping and terrorizing his wife. Hammond jumped out of bed and wrestled the deputy’s gun away. Hammond died after he was Tasered by asecurity guard.

In a proclamation, Dayton says Sandberg had been with the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Department for 24 years; he was a volunteer firefighter and “was regarded as a good neighbor and an active member of his church, and he will be missed by his family, colleagues, and friends.”
