Three attorneys are on the short list for an open judge position in Ramsey County.
Gov. Mark Dayton will interview the three and make the final decision on who will replace Judge Joanne Smith.
The finalist list, compiled by the Commission on Judicial Selection:
- Marc J. Manderscheid of Briggs and Morgan handles real estate, antitrust and commercial bankruptcy matters. He’s a former vice chair and treasurer of the Saint Paul School Board. He’s also a volunteer attorney for Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services and a Macalester Groveland District Council member.
- Laura Nelson Olmstead, an attorney at Robins Kaplan, specializes in commercial matters and family law litigation. She’d previously been a staff attorney at The Advocates for Human Rights. She’s secretary of the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association and a member of the Ramsey County Bar Association’s Bench & Bar Benefit Committee.
- Stephen L. Smith litigates employment, criminal and civil rights cases. He served nearly 14 years as an Assistant State Public Defender and previously was a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office. He’s a member of the Minnesota Association for Justice, the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers.
