Gov. Mark Dayton’s three-hour back surgery on Monday at the Mayo Clinic went well and he’ll be back at work next week, his office said.

The governor has suffered from back problems for years; he had a similar procedure at Mayo three years ago.

He’ll remain at the Rochester hospital for a few days, and when he returns to action, a priority will be working to schedule a special session of the Legislature to help laid-off steel workers on the Iron Range and to address racial disparities in education and income.

A scheduled meeting on the special session was postponed when Dayton’s office announced the elective surgery just one day in advance.
