Ramsey County Attorney John Choi has received a top honor from the Minnesota County Attorneys Association for his dedication and leadership.
Choi has been in the news recently for filing criminal charges against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis for failing to protect children in a child-sex-abuse case.
And this week he filed a felony assault charge against a 16-year-old Central High School student for attacking a teacher.
The county attorneys group gave Choi its Award of Excellence for “dedication, professionalism and commitment to public service and the public practice of law by demonstrating extraordinary leadership initiative, or innovation.”
The group said Choi is “well known for his innovative approach in making reforms to the criminal justice system.”
Cited as an example was his 2011 challenge to prosecutors to “rethink criminalizing youth who commit acts of prostitution and instead to treat them as the victims they are.”
And his office is leading state efforts aimed at “identifying and intervening with sexually exploited and trafficked youth.”
