DFL state Sen. Jim Metzen gets challenge from Matt Klein

Long-time DFL state Sen. Jim Metzen of South St. Paul will face an in-party challenge this year.

Matt Klein, a physician and school board member, says he’ll seek the DFL endorsement for the party endorsement in Senate District 52, taking on Metzen, who was elected to the state Senate in 1986; before that he’d been in the state House for six terms.

Metzen has been treated for a recurrence of lung cancer and the The Pioneer Press notes that he has not said publicly whether he’ll seek reelection in November.

Klein, of Mendota Heights, is a physician at Hennepin County Medical Center and a school board member in District 197, the West St. Paul, Mendota Heights and Eagan school district.

According to the story, Klein said that “his run is not about Metzen. Rather, he said, his campaign is about bringing new people into politics.”
