With only one declared DFL candidate remaining in the 2nd District congressional race, party officials have cancelled a series of debate forums that had been scheduled over the next two months.

Dr. Mary Lawrence and Roger Kittelson withdrew from the race this week, leaving only Angie Craig in the running for the party endorsement. Officials said, though, that they may reschedule some forums if other candidates enter the race.

Five GOP candidates have been seeking their party’s endorsement for the seat, which is open with the retirement of Republican U.S. Rep. John Kline. They are: former talk-show host Jason Lewis, former Sen. John Howe, former Rep. Pam Myhra, activist David Gerson and newcomer David Benson-Staebler. And a sixth, Darlene Miller of Prior Lake, has filed papers to enter the race.

The district consists of Dakota, Scott, Goodhue, and Wabasha counties, with parts of Rice and Washington counties.

  1. Just like the presidential race

it looks like democracy is only alive and well in the republican party. The ironically named “democrats” prefer a coronation.
