Mondale praises delegation diversity, touts party unity

DENVER — Each morning of the convention, the Minnesota delegation holds a two-hour breakfast meeting beginning at 7 a.m.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Sen. Amy Klobuchar are co-chairs of the delegation and masters of ceremonies of the breakfast sessions.

At today’s session, former Vice President Walter Mondale got a huge ovation before and after a short talk he gave to the delegates. Mondale marveled over the diversity of the Minnesota delegation.

“When I started,” he said, “the delegates were all white guys.”

Mondale, who formerly backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, urged the delegates – many of whom still support her – to get behind the Obama-Biden ticket.

“When we lose, it’s because Democrats defeat themselves,” said Mondale, who headed the 1984 Democratic ticket. “Let’s get this family together and win this election.”

There were cheers, of course, but Mondale was not exactly facing a tough audience. — Doug Grow
