Democrats in the Senate decided by a vote of 42 to 13 today that Sen. Joseph Lieberman can continue to lead the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee despite his outspoken support of John McCain — and vocal criticism of Barack Obama — during the presidential campaign. Both incumbents and newly elected senators took part.
“Democratic senators voted instead to oust Mr. Lieberman from the Environment and Public Works Committee, where he had been chairman of a subcommittee. That penalty was a slap on the wrist compared with the prospect of losing the homeland security leadership post,” the New York Times reported. Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent, will caucus with the Democrats.
