Obama to keep Gates at Defense

In a demonstration of bipartisan continuity, President-elect Barack Obama plans to retain Robert Gates as secretary of Defense, the New York Times reports, adding that an agreement is being worked out for Gates to stay perhaps one year.

“The move will give the new president a defense secretary with support on both sides of the aisle in Congress, as well as experience with foreign leaders around the world and respect among the senior military officer corps,” Peter Baker and Thom Shanker report.
