Valerie Jarrett: adviser with big portfolio

In tapping Valerie Jarrett on Saturday to be a senior adviser, President-elect Barack Obama has chosen a close friend who played a key role in his campaign and a veteran of Chicago’s brutal political culture, writes Lynn Sweet, Washington bureau chief of the Chicago Sun-Times.

“While Jarrett’s national profile has skyrocketed because of her association with Obama’s presidential campaign, Chicagoans have known her for years because she is one of the best-connected people in the city, a fixture in the city’s elite corporate, civic and social life,” Sweet writes.
