Freeborn County Environmental Services has started a new recycling program aimed at small businesses, writes Jason Schoonover in the Albert Lea Tribune.  The goal of the program is to cut down on the amount of recyclable paper going into landfills.

The Crookston School District is currently facing a deficit of about $800,000, reports Mike Christopherson of the Crookston Daily Times. The debt is largely attributed to a discrepancy between the number of expected students and the number of those who actually enrolled this year.

Leaders in Duluth had plenty of ideas regarding a federal stimulus for the city during a visit from Sen. Amy Klobuchar last week, writes Peter Passi of the Duluth News Tribune  (registration required).  Suggestions included initiatives to make older homes more energy efficient, rebuilding infrastructure, redevelopment of the US Steel property, and airport improvements.

A train in Page, N.D., derailed on Sunday, sending 37 train cars toppling and creating a fireball after a car carrying methane gas exploded, reports Kelly Smith of the Fargo-Moorhead In-Forum (reg./req.).  No one was injured in the accident.

St. Louis County schools are preparing to make serious budget cuts following the announcement of the state’s deficit, writes Tom Klein of the Timberjay.   The school had already planned to cut expenses after voters rejected a proposed excess operating levy, which would have provided $770,000 annually over five years.
