Poets hope Obama will become third president to include poetry in his inauguration

John Kennedy did it. Bill Clinton did it. The Associated Press is reporting poets and poetry lovers hope President-elect Barack Obama will include poetry in his inaugural speech. “Speculation is rife in the poetry world,” says Tree Swenson, executive director of the Academy of American Poets. “Given that he is so eloquent himself and so tuned to words, the assumption is that, of course, he will have a poet at the inauguration.” Names of poets who might be tapped include Philip Levine, Robert Pinsky, Yusef Komunyakaa and U.S. Poet Laureate Kay Ryan.
