There’s no question I’m in a minority here, but I thought Barack Obama’s performance last night was a disappointment–a little terrifying, even. He sounded soporific, exhausted, cautious to a fault. Overwhelmed, I think, is the best one-word summary.

So what did you think?

Video from the hour-long presser is all over the web, so I won’t repeat it here. For contrast’s sake, I present instead a (partial) recording of the first public prime-time address by the last president to take office amid economic collapse–FDR’s first fireside chat, delivered on March 5, 1933.

  1. The audio is rough on FDR’s intro… Thought he was talking about “Spanking?!” Oh, right. “Banking.” Wow.

  2. More seriously I found it to be gripping almost cinematic (whatever that means). I agree there was something a little bit terrifying about it. Maintaining a hope while being truthful. Notifying the country without being alarmist just dancing on the edge. Obama really does seem to have a different vibe than Bush jr. and Clinton.
