Senate confirms Diaz and Kaplan for ambassador posts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate has officially confirmed the ambassador nominations of Minnesotans Miguel Diaz and Sam Kaplan.

The Tuesday vote will send Diaz to Italy, where he will be Ambassador to the Holy See, and Kaplan to the Middle East, where he will be ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco.

On Wednesday, Diaz said in a statement that his family would be looking to relocate to Rome as soon as possible.

“I am very grateful to the Senate for this confirmation and to President Obama for the confidence he has invested in me,” Diaz said in a statement. “I am honored to be given the responsibility of representing the people of the United States to the Holy See… and I look forward to presenting my credentials to His Holiness at the earliest opportunity.”

Kaplan was not immediately available for comment, but has previously said that if confirmed, he and his wife Sylvia would move to Morocco this fall.
