Franken calls report on forensic analysis ‘terrifying’

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., called the conclusions of a recent report on forensic analysis “damning” and “terrifying,” according to National Public Radio.

The two-year study commissioned by Congress found that DNA evidence is the only forensic technique that has been scientifically proven.

“Everything else, from ballistics to blood spatters, is uncertain,” NPR reported.

In general, the senators at the hearing appeared to support creating national standards for crime labs and forensic analysts, according to NPR.

This report is very, very important to our system of justice. Most of the assumptions supporting the current use of forensic testimony simply are misguided or erroneous. As a result, the possibility of a “fair trial” is compromised. Franken seems to get it. I hope the result will be a significant correction of the rules of scientific evidence.
