Oberstar admonishes hazardous-materials agency

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During a congressional hearing this week, Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., admonished the agency that oversees the transportation of hazardous materials, according to Greenwire.

“This agency needs a house cleaning,” Oberstar reportedly said. “Safety is not a one-time snapshot; it’s continued vigilance … and this agency has lost its way and along the way has developed a very cozy relationship with the industry it regulates.”

Oberstar’s comments came after congressional and Office of the Inspector General investigations found that the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has a “lax permitting policy and maintains too cozy a relationship with the industry it regulates,” according to Greenwire.
