Minnesota Democrats want nonprofits to be part of health care legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Minnesota Democratic Reps. Betty McCollum, Jim Oberstar, Keith Ellison and Tim Walz joined about 40 of their colleagues today in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking that nonprofit employers be included in the health care legislation.

“The nonprofit sector includes a wide range of organizations from the Salvation Army to the Red Cross to the local domestic violence shelter that are all working to improve life for families in our communities,” McCollum said in a statement. It’s only fair that nonprofit organizations receive comparable treatment to the small business sector in health care reform legislation.”

None of the House health care bills include measures for nonprofit employees, though it is the fourth largest segment of the American workforces, according to McCollum.
