USDA confirms H1N1 in State Fair pig

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed the presence of H1N1 influenza in a pig sample collected at the Minnesota State Fair, according to an announcement today by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The sample represents the country’s first case of H1N1 in swine. Additional samples are being tested.

The infection, which occurred in a show pig, does not suggest infection of commercial herds, according to the USDA.

Additional samples are being tested, but Vilsack stressed that people cannot get the flu from eating pork and that “there is no scientific basis to restrict trade in pork and pork products.”
