Condolences pour in for Mike Hatch in death of daughter

The political scene flooded with condolences for former Attorney General Mike Hatch whose daughter committed suicide in Chicago.  The Star Tribune reports “Anne Hatch, 27, was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m. Sunday, after being found hanged in her home, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.”  The report goes on to quote the Hatch family saying “This is a sad and painful time for our family,” the statement continued. “Nothing in life can prepare you for the loss of a child.”

Mike Hatch has been appearing regularly on the Almanac political panel and has shown a softer more non-partisan side since leaving politics.  Some immediate and heartfelt responses came from the other side of the aisle.  Republican Party Chair Tony Sutton said on Twitter “I have 3 girls; I can imagine nothing worse. My condolences to the Hatch family.” Republican Ben Golnik followed with “Very sad — condolences to the Hatch family.”  Progressive blogger Eric Pusey tweeted “Horrible, awful news.”  DFL Rep. John Lesch said “Prayers out to the Hatch family today. Mike, I for one am proud of you for raising a daughter with spunk. I am very sorry for your loss.”

No matter your politics this is unspeakably sad.

I wish that news articles on this tragedy would refrain from mentioning the Hatch daughters’ 21st birthday incident years ago. Information on Anne’s education and employment would be more germane and respectful.

Mike Hatch’s mental health advocacy has helped many people and their families in Minnesota and beyond. How reassuring to know that no matter what the politics, people are reaching out to support him and his family now.

Mike and Patti are such supportive parents.
This is the saddest thing that can happen to a family.
My prayers go out to them and their daughter Elizabeth.

Anne represented her father at a large 2006 pre-election party that I co-hosted in the Brainerd area. She took the time to speak to just about everyone, and she just raised the level of the whole event.
